[edit] Dragons
Dragons are most often viewed as evil, fire-breathing mythical creatures from Medieval stories, but, they are not. In fact, dragons probably never inhabited planet earth. They are seen in one of two physical forms:
- Anthropomorphic (a mesh of dragon and human, often seen as bipedal)
- Feral (traditional dragons, quadrupedal)
In addition, there are two main varieties of dragon-eastern and western. While western dragons seem to be the most common in the dragon-kin community, there are eastern dragons as well.
[edit] Types of Dragons
- Western Dragons: Your typical dragon with a bulky body, a set of wings, and often fire-breath.
- Eastern Dragons: A snakelike body, usually lacking wings.
- Elemental: Dragons linked to an element.
- Wyverns: Smaller than their cousins, wyverns are bipedal, having a set of wings where their "arms" would otherwise be. In mythology, wyverns are often seen as malicious and having poisonous breath.
[edit] Draconic Powers
- In many stories and myths, dragons are seen to be very magickal and wise creatures. While there may be many who describe their dragon-selves along these lines, there are also a number of 'kin who claim to possess no magickal ability as dragons at all, and may also denounce being 'wise' (either by word or action). This does not make them "not dragon" in any way, unless one is to argue from the 'textbook definition' of "dragon".
- As humans physically, most dragonkin do not have any additional powers any human would not have, though many are drawn to use of energy manipulation; perhaps in the form of Qigong or more direct methods (Astral Dynamics). Some may prefer this direct method in magick work, rather than using rituals as found in Neo-Paganism. This will inevitably vary from dragon to dragon, however.
- Some may claim the ability to shapeshift (more commonly known P-shift or "physical shift" in the otherkin and therian communities, usually referring to changing into one's "true form"); however, this feat is believed to be impossible due to the impractical mechanics of it in this reality, and that there has never been any verifiable proof brought forward by those who have claimed to do it. An 'M-shift, or mental shift is more plausible, and more common, when one speaks of being able to "shift".
- Many dragons may claim to have an array of powers in their original form. This may vary from dragon to dragon, but some of the more common powers are listed below.
- Elemental Magicks: The ability to form, manipulate, and wield certain elements, in order to heal, protect, or kill.
- Healing Magicks: Dragons have a strong affinity for Healing, and are able to not only easily heal their own wounds, but others' wounds as well.
[edit] Dragon'kin Community
Despite the idea that dragons are solitary creatures, there are a large number of places where dragon'kin can meet others on the internet. Many dragons started out on boards such as this, usually posting with non-kin dragon lovers and roleplayers. One of the first where dragon'kin became more numerous was Alt.fan.dragons (commonly referred to as Alfandra). Many would say this was the beginning of the main dragon'kin community. A number of forums that were once large are now defunct, however, usually due to squabbles between co-admins, or admins and members, leading to the casualties of Tysha's Dragon Forum, Rashan's Dragon Forum, and some others. Other forums simply never got off the ground and faded out.
[edit] Behaviour Within the Dragon'kin Communities
- There is a wide range of individuals within the community, from people who have just stumbled across the concept of being something 'other than human', to those who have been around for a good number of years and hang around to help out the new members, having exhausted themselves on discussion of their own draconity. With this variety, there will be a number of general behaviours one may see in a given dragon group.
- Young members may be prone to making false claims and "human-hating", possibly as an attempt to feel special, or because of seeing it from other members and thinking that such behaviour is acceptable. Older members may tend to come across as "mean" or "elitist", having had time to learn more about their dragonselves and seeing the same discussions and claims repeatedly, possibly leading to a sort of 'disillusionment' with the community for them.
- As a whole, dragon'kin are hard to define, and will resist most attempts to pigeon-hole them into narrow definitions; a prime example of this is when a person tries to say all dragon'kin have an element. Many dragon'kin will then, in response, refute this statement vigorously based on their personal experience. As a result, there can be found a good deal of topics on dragon forums which are hotly debated, and, due to their human nature, may end up in crude name-calling if there is an impasse between debating members.
